Louisiana Sets Record With $70.9M in Unclaimed Property Returned

Louisiana returned a record $70.9 million in unclaimed property during fiscal year 2026, the highest annual total in state history.

Even with that milestone, the state still holds about $1.2 billion waiting for the rightful owners to claim it.

How much was returned

State officials said the record total was driven by the Unclaimed Property Division’s work. The average claim was about $900, and roughly 1 in 6 Louisiana residents has unclaimed property.

What counts as unclaimed property

Unclaimed property can include:

  • Uncashed payroll checks.

  • Dormant bank accounts.

  • Utility deposits.

  • Insurance proceeds.

  • Stock certificates.

  • Royalties and interest payments.

The state holds these assets when businesses can’t find the owner, often because of an outdated address or failed contact attempts.

How to check for yours

Louisiana residents can search their name at LaCashClaim.org to see whether money or other assets are waiting to be claimed.

The state’s unclaimed property page also allows residents to search and start a claim online.

What you may need to file a claim

According to the state’s FAQ, claims generally require:

  • A copy of your driver’s license or other photo ID.

  • Proof of your Social Security number.

  • Proof of a current or previous address, if needed.

  • A notarized claim form for claims of $5,000 or more.

Processing can take up to 90 days depending on volume.
